"I'm Glad" was the third single lifted from Jennifer Lopez's third album, "This is Me... Then." The single failed to stand up to the albums' previous two singles, "Jenny From the Block" and "All I Have," peaking at #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and barely scraping the Top 10 in most countries. The track failed to garner interest in the UK, peaking at #11 and dropping quickly off of the charts.

In 2001, following the success of her "¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?" and "MTV Unplugged" records, Latin pop diva Shakira began working on an English crossover album. Collaborating with Gloria Estefan, she wrote and recorded over three dozen tracks for the record.

Her first English single, "Whenever, Wherever" was co-written by Estefan and produced by Tim Mitchell. The track went on to become the most successful international hit of her career, topping the charts in numerous European and Latin American countries, as well as Australia and Japan.

Rachel Stevens - Funky Dory (2004)

"Funky Dory" is the solo debut album by former S Club 7 pop tart Rachel Stevens. The album was produced by various "hit factories" including Bloodshy & Avant and Richard X but received a mixed reception from music critics, some of whom complimented its surprising diversity, charm and relative depth, while others though of it to be poorly written, produced and forgettable.

Despite critical commentary, it became Stevens' most successful album release, reaching #9 in the UK. Sales were slow and the albums' second single tanked, prompting Polydor to send Rachel back into the studio to record tracks for a re-release of the album. This proved a successful move when "Some Girls" nearly topped the UK singles chart, just barely missing the #1 spot.

The re-release peaked at #13 in the UK and went on to sell more copies than the original release and yielding one further single, a cover of Bananarama's "More, More, More."

La Toya Jackson - Why Don't You Want My Love? (1991)

After the massive failure that was her 1989 "Bad Girl" album, La Toya Jackson signed a deal with BCM Records to release her seventh musical offering. A wealth of material was recorded in the fall of 1990 for an album to follow the first single in the spring of '91.

The label started a huge print campaign for "Why Don't You Want My Love?", advertising the single with the caption "A fresh new start with BCM." The track was originally scheduled for a release in fall 1990 but was delayed several times until its release in January 1991. Released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, it was intended to be the lead single for the disc, but the company went bankrupt before the album could be released. "Why Don't You Want My Love?" was the only song to be released from La Toya's time with BCM and it is not known what happened to the rest of the material that was recorded.

The single was released on 7", 12" and CD formats, but failed to reach the charts. La Toya was quickly snatched up by Pump Records, a division of Dino Records, and released a new single and album just a few months later.

Ronan Keating | Turn It On (2003)

"Turn It On" was Ronan Keating's third solo album, released during the holiday season of 2003. Despite having two chart-topping albums under his best, Ronan couldn't quite keep up the momentum with "Turn It On," which peaked at a paltry #21 in the UK.

Two of the singles from the album, "Last Thing On My Mind" and "She Believes (In Me)," charted within the Top 5 in the UK, with the third, "Lost for Words," charting at #9. Even with the success of the singles, the album simply fell off the charts without a trace.

Victoria Beckham | Not Such An Innocent Girl (2001)

"Not Such An Innocent Girl" was the first single to be released from the long-awaited solo debut from Posh Spice Victoria Beckham. After intense promotion lasting six weeks in the UK, people were expecting big things from the only Spice Girl not yet to have a solo #1. Unfortunately, the single reached #6, which led to a virtual media field-day. The single sold 36,000 copies in its first week, and over 80,200 altogether, the 163rd best seller of 2001.

The track failed to chart in most European territories despite her high celebrity profile, but did manage to chart within the Top 10 in Spain and the Top 40 in Australia and Spain.

Delta Goodrem | Believe Again (2007)

"Believe Again" was the second single released from Delta Goodrem's 2007 "Delta" album. The song received a 4.5/5 star review from The Sun Herald, praising its big strings, vocals, beats and accompanying video.

The track was released to radio in mid-November 2007. It became the most added song on Australian radio that week, while Delta's previous single, "In This Life," remained in the #1 spot on the Australian Airplay Chart. When released physically, the single debuted at #2 on the ARIA chart.

Lil' Kim | Crush on You (1997)

After leaving hardcore the rap group Junior M.A.F.I.A., the Queen Bee Lil' Kim struck out on her own. Her debut solo album "Hard Core" was released in late 1996 and has since been heralded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time.

The album's second single "Crush On You" is one of Kim's biggest hits, peaking within the Top 20 in the US and Top 25 in the UK.

Jessica Simpson | A Public Affair (2006)

Jessica Simpson's fourth album, and first following her divorce from crooner Nick Lachey, was released via Epic Records in the summer of 2006 to little fanfare. The album received scathing reviews in the press and has been criticised for its lack of originality and its similarities to 70s and 80s disco and pop music without a contemporary spin, namely the striking similarities between the title track and Madonna's anthem "Holiday."

The album shipped 500,000 copies in the US but many were left unsold. On a worldwide scale, the album has seen a fortune almost just as bleak, selling under 800,000 copies. The lead single, "A Public Affair" was the first single released from the record but failed to catch on, peaking at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #20 in the UK.

A second single was released from the album called "I Belong to Me," which was not featured on original pressings of the album. (Subsequent pressings have included the song as a bonus track tacked to the end.) The single bombed and the record was quickly forgotten about.

Ladies of Moulin Rouge | Lady Marmalade (2001)

Although covered many times since the 1975 Labelle original, the most successful version of "Lady Marmalade" was recorded 26 years later by pop superstars Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa, and P!nk as a single for the "Moulin Rouge!" soundtrack, introducing the song to a whole new generation of music listeners, and brought the song's infamous catchphrase back into mainstream culture.

Their version was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US for five weeks and also topped the singles charts in the UK and Australia.

M2M | Don't Say You Love Me (1999)

Norwegian pop music duo M2M was composed of two girls - Marion Elise Raven and Marit Elisabeth Larsen, who had known each other since they were small children.

The group debuted with their first single, "Don't Say You Love Me," in 1999, which was featured on the soundtrack of "Pokémon: The First Movie." The film helped the song to reach success worldwide and the duo released their debut album, Shades of Purple, in 2000, which debuted at number one in Norway and several Asian countries and in the Top Forty in most other countries. In September that year, the duo toured with Hanson, performing as the boys' opening act.

The single acheived moderate success in the US, reaching #21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single has sold over 2 million copies in the US alone and topped the charts in over 12 countries..

Hey guys,

I don't know if you all are aware of Joyce, but I have been in e-mail correspondance with her for about a year now. I got an e-mail from her late this evening after not having heard anything for a while.

Anyway, her mother has recently passed away after having a bad fall. "She collapsed on Nov. 18th on a Sun. morning getting ready for church. She never recovered and passed away on Nov. 30th. Not only was she my mother, but she was my mentor and spiritual adivsor, and I realllllllly do miss her."

I just hope you all will keep Joyce and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Michael Tolcher | Sooner Or Later (2005)

Michael Tolcher is a little-known independent artist best known for his song "Sooner Or Later." The track, from his first full-length LP "I Am," was used as the theme song for the 2004-5 ABC drama "Life As We Know It," starring Kelly Osbourne, Ben Foster and Sean Faris.

Michael blends pop, blues and urban grooves into a smooth, upbeat song that was surprisingly a flop! The single failed to chart and the album has only sold 80,000 copies to date.

"No Exit" was Blondie's seventh studio record, released in February 1999. When it was recorded, it marked the time time that the band had recorded or performed together since 1982.

Hailed as a huge comeback effort, the album peaked at #3 in the UK charts. It spawned two UK singles - "Maria," which became the band's first #1 debut, and "Nothing is Real But the Girl," which peaked at a paltry #26. The title track was also released as a US-only single but met with little fanfare.

Justin Guarini | Justin Guarini (2003)

"Justin Guarini" was the self-titled debut album from 2002 American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini. Released nine months after the conclusion of Justin's season, the long delayed album debuted at #20 on Billboard's Top 200 chart, but soon fell off the charts with minimal promotion.

In a radio interview, Ryan Seacrest, the American Idol host, remarked of Justin, "Following his season, there was a huge hype surrounding Justin and no one could believe the hysteria. But, everything was new and they weren't quite sure what to do. With a show like American Idol the window of opportunity is very, very small. Also, Justin had creative conflicts with his record company as far as the direction of the album that additionally aided in putting him past that window of opportunity. After the first season, they learned to capitalize on the window of opportunity for non-winners keeping them in the public eye with singles, videos, rushed CDs, etc., something that didn't happen for Justin".

In an interview with MTV, Justin spoke of the experience saying, "It really has been just Music Industry Education 101. I learned a lot from it. And it's not a finger-pointing issue to me; I take as much responsibility as I can."

Subsequently, Justin went on to co-produce and independently release a second album, a jazz album titled "Stranger Things Have Happened," and is working on a third album, planned to be a fusion of musical genres, in collaboration with upstart label 3AM Music.

Janet Jackson | janet. (Limited Edition) (1993)

With the release of the "Rhythm Nation 1814" album, Jackson fulfilled her contract with A&M Records, and much to the fury of A&M, signed a new deal with Virgin Records. Released in May 1993, "janet." the album became the first by a female artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart during the Nielsen SoundScan era. The lead off single, "That's the Way Love Goes," became the first and only single in radio history to enter the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at #1. Within a few weeks it also became #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached the top spot in 22 countries, selling eight million copies worldwide at its time of release with four million of those in the US.

Janet also won several awards during this time period, including a Grammy. It was the fourth best-selling album of the year in the US, and the eighth best-selling album on the year-end Billboard Top Albums chart the following year. The album spawned a total of six Top 10 hit singles in the US including "If," "You Want This" and "Because of Love." In July 1993, Janet made her big-screen debut in the John Singleton directed film "Poetic Justice." Janet's ballad "Again" was featured on the film's soundtrack and garnered a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song From A Motion Picture.

Geri Halliwell | It's Raining Men (2001)

Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell had been working on a follow-up to her debut solo album "Schizophonic" since early 2000. Finally, at the beginning of 2001 she was ready to get started with promotion of what was supposed to be the album's first single, "Feels Like Sex." However, she was approached by the producers of a new film called "Bridget Jones's Diary" who wanted her to record a cover of the Weather Girls' classic anthem "It's Raining Men" for the accompanying soundtrack. Geri agreed under the condition that the song could feature on her forthcoming album as well.

EMI wanted the song released as a single and reluctantly, Geri agreed. Geri's reluctance was soon disproven when the track became Geri's fourth consecutive #1 UK single, selling 155,000 in its first week. The song became a huge hit, selling over four million copies worldwide and was the 13th best seller of 2001 and Ginger's most successful single release to date. Despite initially being tipped to be released as a single in the US, there was a lack of interest and plans for the US single and album release were scrapped.

"It's Raining Men" won the award for International Song of the Year at the 2002 NRJ Music Awards in France, one of Geri's only awards as a solo artist.

Oddly, in July of 2006 the song entered at #79 on the Mexican Digital Sales Chart, spending two weeks inside the Top 100.

Mutya Buena | Real Girl (2007)

After leaving the Sugababes in December 2005, Mutya Buena began working on material for a solo career. Since going solo, Mutya had collaborated with numerous artists including Tah Mac, MC Viper, Groove Armada, and most notably George Michael on the single "This is Not Real Love."

Mutya co-signed a record deal with her former bandmembers' label Universal Island Records and 4th & Broadway. The first single, "Real Girl," entered the UK Singles hart at #11 on downloads alone, climbing to #2 after its physical release date.

The single is shortlisted at the 2008 BRIT Awards for Best British Single, up against her former bandmembers as well as Leona Lewis, Kate Nash, & Take That.

Bon Jovi | (You Want To) Make a Memory (2007)

"(You Want To) Make a Memory" was the first single to be lifted from Bon Jovi's tenth studio album "Lost Highway." The song debuted at #39 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and was the highest debuting song of the week. After repeatedly moving up and down on the Hot Country Songs charts, it reached a peak of #35. The song was also a "Hot Shot" on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's highest debut on the chart of their career. However, in the UK the single only peaked at #33, Bon Jovi's worst performance in the UK singles chart since "Living in Sin" in 1989.

The song is currently nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo/Group with Vocals at the 2008 Grammy Awards.

Kelly Rowland | Stole (2002)

"Stole" was one of the first tracks that Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland worked on while recording her debut solo album.

Pressure laid high on Kelly's shoulders after various #1s with her band Destiny's Child and "Dilemma." However, the single managed to continue her series of hits seamlessly as "Stole" entered the Top 20 on the majority of the charts it appeared on. In the end it even reached the Top 10 of the singles charts in Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Switzerland and in the UK.

In the United States the song saw moderate success when it debuted at #92 on the Billboard Hot 100. Five weeks later it reached its peak position at #27, eventually leaving the Hot 100 after just twelve weeks.

Kym Marsh | Sentimental (2003)

In 2001 ITV's talent show Popstars was on the lookout for five girls, or boys, to be part of a group, that would go on to try and make it big in the charts. Kym Marsh was one of the lucky ones who impressed judges with her vocal talent.

After becoming one of the chosen five for the group now called Hear'Say, Kym and the group hit the #1 spot with their both debut single "Pure & Simple" and also with their album "Popstars." The media were quick to savage the group, and scrutinise their every move. The band enjoyed one more single before tensions started to emerge. After Hear'Say released an unsuccessful second album, Kym broke news that she was leaving the band.

After a while out of the spotlight, Kym emerged again, signing a solo record deal with Island Records. Her first single, "Cry," went to #2 in the UK singles chart, whilst her 2nd single "Come On Over" made #10. Kym's make-or-break 3rd single, "Sentimental," stalled at #35 resulting in her being dropped by Island Records.

Natasha Bedingfield | Soulmate (2007)

"Soulmate" was the second single to be released from Natasha Bedingfield's sophomore album "N.B."

Despite warm reception from fans, the single was not a favourite of music critics. Paul Taylor of the Manchester Evening News called the song "impassioned" and IndieLondon.co.uk called the track "far too sentimental," rating it two out of five stars.

"Soulmate" debuted on the UK singles chart at #70 before climbing to its peak position of #7 three weeks later. The single was a moderate success in Europe as well. It reached the Top 10 in Switzerland and Norway and the Top 20 in Austria, Finland, Germany, Spain and Poland.

Holly Dolly | Dolly Song (2006)

Holly Dolly is an animated donkey who rose to internet fame dancing in a video with the infamous Loituma Girl animation in the background. The track blew up in Europe and became one of the highest-selling ringtones of all time.

Like many of his peers, teen heartthrob Joey Lawrence saw himself as a man of many talents. As an actor, he captured the hearts of millions of teenage girls on the hit TV show "Blossom." Naturally, the next step was music.

In 1993, Joey released his self-titled debut album through MCA Records. Working with such music heavyweights as Ian Price, Teddy Riley and Elliot Wolff, Joey had what seemed to be a hit on his hands. His debut single, "Nothin' My Love Can't Fix," charted at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #13 in the UK singles chart. Two more singles from the album, "I can't Help Myself" and "Stay Forever," also managed to crack the UK Top 50.

The album was a sizeable hit and a follow-up was released some four years later to a mixed reception.

Christina Milian | It's About Time (2004)

"It's About Time" was the second album from Christina Milian. Despite acheiving international success with her debut, Christina's music never caught on in her homeland of the United States. But Island Records gained some confidence in Christina the second go round, as the albums' first single, "Dip It Low," was getting early airplay and creating a buzz. It became her most successful single, charting at #2 in the UK and #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The albums' second single release failed to set the charts alight, however, and just charted within the Billboard Hot 100 at #100 and barely cracked the UK Top 10.

The album debuted at #14 on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling over 36,000 copies in the first week, and #21 in the UK. However, after a few months, sales of the album were lackluster at 385,000 copies. The album was certified Silver in the UK on the 15th October 2004 for 60.000 copies sold. In 2005 "It's About Time" received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

"Don't" was the second single from Canuck Shania Twain's 2005 "Greatest Hits" album. The single received very little promotion and underperformed in most territories.

It debuted on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at #44, Twain's fourth highest debut of all time, and highest of the week. The single spent fifteen weeks on the chart and climbed to a peak position of #24, where it remained for one week. "Don't!" became Twain's first single to miss Top 20 since 2000's "Rock This Country!"

Released to adult contemporary radio in March 2005, "Don't!" debuted at #29. The single spent sixteen weeks on the chart and climbed to a peak position of #18, where it remained for four non-consecutive weeks. "Don't!" became Twain's tenth consecutive Top 20 single. However, across the pond, the single didn't fare quite as well. The single debuted and peaked at #30 in the UK, becoming her lowest-peaking single in the country. It fell to #57 in its second week and dropped off the chart immediately afterwards.

Pop star-turned-actress Jessica Simpson recorded a rendition of the Lee Hazlewood classic "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" for the soundtrack to the 2005 film "The Dukes of Hazzard." Jessica's cover was co-produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and was released as the soundtrack's first single. becoming her fifth Top 20 single in the US.

"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" peaked at #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and in late 2005 the RIAA certified the single Gold for 500,000 legal downloads or more. It became her biggest hit in Australia, where it reached #2 and remained in the Top 40 for 24 weeks. It was also her first Top 5 hit in the UK, where it peaked at #4. The single also peaked in the Top 20 in New Zealand, Austria & Switzerland.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor | Murder on the Dancefloor (2001)

After the release of "Take Me Home," a cover of the Cher classic, British pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor released her best-selling single to date in December 2001. "Murder on the Dancefloor" peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart and became the most played song of 2002 in all of Europe. The song was such a hit that the Sophie's label cancelled what was planned to be the next single, "Lover", and replaced it with the AA-side "Get Over You"/"Move This Mountain."

"Murder" was also a hit in worldwide, peaking at #3 in Australia & New Zealand, #5 in Canada and #26 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in the US.

Eminem | Like Toy Soldiers (2004)

"Like Toy Soldiers" tells the story of Eminem's attempts to calm a violent community of rappers. He speaks openly about problems with The Source magazine and its editor Benzino, as well as Murder Inc. Records, and explains the feud between Ja Rule and 50 Cent. Despite not being released in the US, the song reached the top 40 Stateside and hit #1 in the UK.

The song's video, released in 2004, which depicts Eminem's fellow D12 member Proof being gunned down in a drive-by shooting, took a sudden and tragic turn in the early hours of April 11, 2006, when Proof was actually shot and killed at the CCC nightclub on Detroit's 8 Mile Road.

The Judds | Why Not Me (1984)

Wynonna & Naomi Judd were a mother-daughter duo known as The Judds in the country music industry from the early 1980s through the 1990s. Starting out while Wynonna was still in high school and Naomi was working as an RN, the duo were picked up by RCA to record their first full-length album.

The album reached #1 on the country charts and went on to sell more than a million copies - a huge feat for a new female country act. The song "Why Not Me" went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1986, as did "Mama He's Crazy" in 1985.

"Why Not Me" includes the duo's first Billboard #1 single on the Country music charts, "Mama He's Crazy, which was first released on their 1983 EP "Wynonna & Naomi." Three more singles from the album reached #1 on the country charts: "Why Not Me", "Girls Night Out", and "Love Is Alive."

In 1991, the Judds retired from the music business as a duo due to Naomi's hepatitis, a disease she contracted from a needle prick working as an RN. Wynonna trucked on, however, having even more crossover appeal than the duo and acheiving many Billboard Hot 100 hits as well as successful singles in Europe and Australia.

Pharrell | In My Mind (2006)

"In My Mind" was the first solo album by NERD frontman Pharrell Williams. The album was originally scheduled to be released at the end of 2005 but was delayed after lackluster airplay for the albums' two already-released singles.

The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard album chart behind former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett and a NOW! compilation, barely selling 140,000 copies. The album fell to #9 in its second week and dropped like a stone from there despite single releases from high-profile guests Gwen Stefani and Kanye West. To date the album has sold just under 890,000 copies worldwide.

The album received generally poor reviews from critics. Christian Hoard of Rolling Stone called it "still only so-so, offering a series of modestly tuneful, sometimes snoozy soul-pop-hip-hop songs". Entertainment Weekly said the album "seems divided against itself, rest assured that all of the songs have something in common: They're not remotely catchy". Despite the negative reviews and low sales, the album was surprisingly nominated for in Best Rap Album category at the 2007 Grammy Awards. Not to surprisingly, though, it lost out to Ludacris' "Release Therapy."

Wilson Phillips reunited in 2004 to release "California," an album of lazy, beach-inspired cover songs. "Go Your Own Way", a song originally recorded by Fleetwood Mac, was the first and only single to be lifted from the record. The single peaked at #13 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart whilst the album debuted at #35 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with 31,000 copies sold. The album failed to ever reach sales of over 100,000.

In New Zealand, the album was a surprise hit, reaching the Top 10 and amassing gold sales. "Go Your Own Way" even topped the A/C chart for several weeks.

Hilary Duff | So Yesterday (2003)

After the huge success that was her Lizzie McGuire TV show and movie, Disney sent tween star Hilary Duff into the studio to record her debut album for Hollywood Records. The albums' first single was released in the summer of 2003 to a roaring reception. Premiering on AOL Music, the track drew over half a million streams in just two days.

It was released to US Top 40 radio on July 15 and became the most added song on the format in its first two weeks of release. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #53 before peaking at #42. In Australia the song debuted at #39 and peaked at #8, staying on the chart for twenty weeks and was eventually certified platinum. The single also placed in the Top 10 in Canada, Holland, France, Ireland, Mexico, Taiwan and the UK.

Dannii Minogue & The Soul Seekerz | Perfection (2005)

After the $ucce$$ that was "You Won't Forget About Me," Dannii Minogue & her label, All Around the World, attempted to use the same formula for another single release. Once again, Dannii wrote lyrics for an instrumental club track that was already doing the rounds in Europe. The original track, "Turn Me Upside Down," heavily sampled the Vicki Sue Robinson classic "Turn the Beat Around" and was produced by up-and-coming DJ duo The Soul Seekerz, who have since remixed and produced a number of successful tunes.

What came from the collaboration was a song called "Perfection." The remix promo was leaked surprisingly early on the Internet and was sent to clubs not long after. Neither the song or video were picked up for major airplay and the single, which was tipped to become Dannii's first UK #1, limped into the UK singles chart at #11. It was, however, another UK Club hit, topping that particular chart. The single didn't fare any better in her native Australia either, charting at a mediocre #13. It also charted in the Top 20 in Holland and Finland but failed to garner any other notable chart success. Dannii quickly moved on and released her next single and a greatest hits compilation the following year.

"Perfection" is another Dannii CD that I was lucky enough to have signed last year!

Emma Bunton | We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight (2001)

"We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight" was the fourth and last single to be released from Baby Spice Emma Bunton's debut solo album, "A Girl Like Me". Released on 10th December 2001, the week before the race for the Christmas #1, the single was ignored by the public. It wans't helped by the fact that during part of the major promotional period, Emma took a 2-week promotional trip to Australia - which meant that promotion in the UK for the song was disjointed, and so the song didn't have a positive impact on music buyers.

Even though the single was eventually well-promoted, the single only went to #20 in the UK singles charts, selling 13,000 copies in its first week, and just 35,000 copies altogether. The song only spent five weeks in the Top 75, but had a good Top 40 chart run, spending three weeks around the mid-thirties.

The single was, at the time, the lowest-charting Spice Girls-related single to date. Because of its failure, Emma became the second Spice Girl to be dropped from Virgin Records following Scary Spice Mel B's departure earlier in the year.

Kelly Clarkson | Miss Independent (2003)

Kelly Clarkson made her debut under RCA Records after she won the highly publicized first season of the television series "American Idol" in 2002. The albums' first official single was a track called "Miss Independent," which was one of the biggest hits of the summer of 2003.

The producer and co-writer of the track, Lawrence, had originally given the chorus to Destiny's Child. After they did not record it, Christina Aguilera was offered the chorus, and she incorporated verses written by Matt Morris and continued to co-write with Lawrence. Lawrence was later informed that Christina was not going to finish and use the song because she had found another rock style song that she preferred. Two years later, Lawrence played the song for Kelly. They finished the lyrics and made new additions to the song, eventually using it as the first single from her upcoming long-delayed album "Thankful." Although Lawrence was never in any way asked, informally or officially, to hold or save the song for Christina, she was not pleased that the track had been given to someone else, and at one point there was talk of a possible lawsuit. Fortunately, the matter was able to be settled.

The track went on to peak at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and also peaked in the Top 10 in the UK, Australia, Canada and Holland.

On December 10, 2002, Russian duo t.A.T.u. released "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane," the English version of their Russian debut album. "All the Things She Said" was the first single to be lifted from the record. It was the first single by a Russian artist to hit the #1 in the UK Singles Chart and Australia, where it held the position it held for four weeks. The single has received Platinum and Gold certifications all over the world making its physical and digital sales over 4 million copies.

The song was ranked at #452 in Blender magazine's "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born."

Cleopatra were a musical group from the UK whose members were sisters Cleo, Yonah, and Zainam Higgins. "Cleopatra's Theme" was their debut single and shot straight in at #3 on the UK charts, giving the girls their first Top 5 hit in the UK.

Madonna signed Cleopatra to her US Maverick label and introduced them to America on the Nickelodeon's 11th Annual Kids' Choice Awards. This record was released shortly after gaining them a 26 position on the Billboard Charts and #16 in the R&B charts. The video was a popular choice as it was voted as high as #4 on the TRL Top 10 countdown.

"Can't Hold Us Down" was the fourth single released from Christina Aguilera's second mainstream album "Stripped." Released in the summer of 2003, the single peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her tenth Top 20 hit in the US. Internationally, the song peaked within the Top 10 in the UK, Ireland and Australia and several other countries, and reached #2 in New Zealand. In 2004, it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Originally, Eve was booked to be the guest rapper on this song. The rapper-actress even commented about it on MTV news saying that she had collaborated with Christina on a female-empowering anthem for her upcoming album. However, as the release date of the album approached, Lil' Kim was revealed to be the actual guest on the record without any explanation of what happened to Eve. Many speculate that Kim might have forced her away upon the record. At the time she was dating Scott Storch and might have had a slight rivalry against Eve, and therefore asked Storch to replace Eve with herself on the record.

Melanie B | Feels So Good (2001)

"Feels So Good" was the third single to be released from Scary Spice Mel B's debut solo album "Hot." This single was promoted well and had a nice, big-budget video to back it up. It was originally due to be released on 11th December 2000, but Melanie needed a break after promoting the album and the new Spice Girls releases. It was also a bad time to release the single, as major competition from more established artists were also releasing new material. Virgin Records decided to put back the release for two months and it was eventually released on 19th February 2001.

The single reached #5 in the UK singles chart, selling 55,000 copies in its first week (a very high figure for a #5 position), and a very pleasing 139,100 copies altogether - and was, quite shockingly, the 80th best seller of 2001. Destiny's Child | Independent Women Part I (2000)

"Independent Women Part I" was the first release by Destiny's Child as a trio following the departure of Farrah Franklin. Released as both the theme to the "Charlie's Angels" movie and album's first single in fall 2000, the song held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 11 consecutive weeks. It was in the 2000-2001 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for longest running song by a female group.

In the US, the song also broke the record for the most radio spins in one week and the record for most audience impressions after reaching a staggering 140.4 million listeners. The single also became the group's first ever #1 single in the UK and sold over 421,000 copies. It also reached the #1 position in New Zealand for a week, peaked within the Top 5 placings in Canada, Australia and Switzerland, and charted within the Top 20 in France and Japan.

Christina Aguilera's self-titled debut album came at a time when blonde pop tarts were reigning over the music industry. Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson were receiving huge airplay on radio and television and selling millions of records and RCA thought they had something with a young Christina.

The album surpassed industry expectations when it debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album charts thanks to the help of her single "Genie in a Bottle," which had already spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 prior to the release of the album. The number-one single and the number-one album made her the first new female artist since Britney Spears earlier that year to have both her debut single and debut album reach number one, and because of that, Christina was immediately labeled Britney's rival.

The album proved to have some longevity as it stayed in the top fifteen throughout the 1999 holiday season, even working its way back into the top five thanks to its second single "What a Girl Wants" which had topped the charts by the end of 1999. As the year closed, Aguilera's debut album had already sold four million copies, and by the end of 1999, Aguilera had already become a household name.

In February 2000, she won Best New Artist at the 2000 Grammy Awards. The Grammy win and the continuing success of "What a Girl Wants" propelled the album back into the Top 5 in the US, and by the end of February 2000, Aguilera's debut album had already gone 6x platinum.

A re-release of the album coincided with the release of her fourth single, "Come on over Baby (All I Want Is You)", which became her third US #1 and helped her album reach a certification of 8x platinum by the end of the year.

"Sexbox" was the first single lifted from La Toya Jackson's 1991 "No Relations" album. A huge promotional campaign from Pump Records boosted sales of the single in Holland and Germany, charting at #25 on the Dutch singles chart. "Sexbox" became La Toya's second biggest hit in holland behind her debut single "If You Feel the Funk" in 1980.

Along with promotion of the single and album, La Toya was sent on a promotional tour to hype the release of her best-selling autobiography, "La Toya: Growing Up in the Jackson Family" and her second appearance in Playboy. Despite the hoopla surrounding the book's release, La Toya couldn't drum up enough interest in her music and nothing else was released through Pump Records.

Hey guys! Sorry for the lack of updates this past week. I was out of town for a few days and when I got back, I tried uploading things to Mediafire but it was apparently on the fritz. The download links here wouldn't work either.

Anyway, this message is to tell you all about a new feature I'm implementing into the blog. I'm starting a bi-monthly download called "Essentials" which is basically all of an artist's biggest hits (and in some cases, flops) in one collection. "Doesn't Really Matter" was the lead single from the Universal Pictures film "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps", in which Janet Jackson co-starred with actor Eddie Murphy. It became Jackson's ninth #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and first in the 2000s, staying atop the chart for three weeks. It also made her the first artist in history to score #1 singles in the '80s, '90s, and '00s.

Miss Jackson didn't think that the song would be as big a hit as it was, as she just wrote it for the film. In addition to topping the US charts, it landed in the Top 20 in more than a dozen other countries.

When the Backstreet Boys decided to take a short hiatus in 2001 the most popular member of the band, Nick, was ready to strike out on his own. Jive Records sent him into the studio to cut a solo record. Branding him a young Bryan Adams, Jive was confident that Nick could stand on his own without the other Backstreet Boys by his side.

His debut solo single, "Help Me," was released mid-2002 to mixed reviews. The Bryan Adams influence was definately there, in both sound an image. The track proved to be mildly popular with the video receiving heavy rotation in the US and Australia. Charts don't lie, however, and neither the single or album were performing up to par. Jive quickly rushed out another two singles (each released in different markets) and gave up on the album. *NSYNC member Justin Timberlake would soon be embarking on his own solo career and Jive changed their focus.

Nick soon went back into the studio to record with the Backstreet Boys and also record a follow-up which has never seen the light of day.

"Don't Tell Me" was the second single lifted from Madonna's 2000 album "Music." The track was originally written by Joe Henry, Madonna's brother-in-law. He recorded the track on its own, simply called "Stop", which was released on his 2001 album "Scar." His wife, Melanie, sent a demo of the track to her sister, who recorded her own version.

"Don't Tell Me" peaked at #4 on the U.S. charts and spent 8 weeks in the Top 10. The song was also a huge hit around the world, peaking in the Top 5 in many countries, going in at #2 in Canada and #4 in the UK. It also went to number one in Ireland, and stayed in the key position for three weeks.

After the success of her first album, Melanie C went back into the studio to record what would become her second and final album for Virgin Records. The first single, "Here it Comes Again," didn't stack up to the success of her previous work, charting at #7 in the UK and barely scraping the Top 20 in countries across Europe.

For the albums' second single, Virgin initially decided to take a different approach. "On the Horizon" was set to be released in the UK only, with "Positively Somewhere" being released worldwide and "Let's Love" being released in Japan. However, as the release dates were approaching, Virgin decided against this plan. "On the Horizon" was now going to be released everywhere except Japan, where "Let's Love" was being used in an automobile campaign, therefore receiving a single release.

The track featured production from Gregg Alexander, formerly of the New Radicals, so both Melanie C and her fans were confident that "On the Horizon" would fare well. Unfortunately, they were proven wrong when the charts were released the following week. The single failed to crack the Top 10, peaking at #14 in the UK and did no better anywhere else.

Lonestar | Amazed (1999/2000)

"Amazed" is a track that was originally recorded by popular country band Lonestar and released as a single from the band's album "Lonely Grill." The song spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in 1999 and crossed over to pop radio, climbing to number #24.

"Amazed" was remixed for mainstream radio (a tactic commonly used to present country-leaning songs to non-country audiences) and the new mix's popularity prompted a re-entry in the Hot 100. On its second chart run, the track went to number one for two weeks in March of 2000.

World-~~famous~~fabulous female impersonator RuPaul Charles saw a mildly successful music career in the mid-1990s.

With his hilarious "Supermodel (You Better Work)" single in 1993, RuPaul crossed over from the underground gay scene to appeal to club audiences all over the world. Ru could easily have been a novelty act or a one-hit wonder, but after scoring two more Billboard 12" sales hits and a gold-seller with the "Supermodel Of The World" album, this motor-mouthed extrovert went on to super stardom.

Ru's second album, "Foxy Lady," was released in 1996. Despite his growing celebrity, it failed to chart within the Billboard 200. However, the leadoff single, "Snapshot," found success in the dance market and peaked at #4 on the Bilboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. It also enjoyed limited mainstream success, charting at #95 on the Billboard Hot 100.

British singer-songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor has seen a great deal of success both as a solo artist and with her former band, theaudience. Her first two solo albums were rather bit hits, with her first offering being certified two-times platinum in the UK and her second album gold.

When it came to recording her third solo album, Sophie enlisted a sleu of producers and songwriters to craft the record. The first tester single, "Catch You," was released in February 2007, charting in the UK Top 10 and in the Top 40 in various countries throughout Europe.

The second single, "Me & My Imagination," was set as the second single prior to the albums release. Despite the critical praise, the single failed to set the charts alight, limping into the UK Top 40 at #23. Despite the disappointing result in her homeland, the single did enter the Estonian and Ukranian Top 10 and even topped the charts in Greenland.

"Sometimes" was the second single from pop newcomer Britney Spears, released from her debut album "...Baby One More Time" during the second quarter of 1999.

Due to its airplay only status, "Sometimes" was at a chart disadvantage from the beginning. At the time it was released, songs generally were accompanied by a CD single, being that they were still a major key in a song's commercial success. Despite this, "Sometimes" still proved to fare well on the charts, peaking just outside the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 at #21 due to its Top 20 peak on the Hot 100 Airplay. The song was later ranked at #86 on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End chart for 1999.

"Sometimes" also proved successful at Top 40 radio, going Top 10 on both the Top 40 Tracks and Mainstream Top 40 charts, as well as top twenty on the Rhythmic Top 40 and, perhaps more notably, the Adult Contemporary.

The single was another international success, reaching the Top Ten in many European nations and Australia. It was also a huge hit in the UK ranking at #48 on the 1999 year-end charts selling a total of 414,000 copies and has sold almost four million copies worldwide.

Jennifer Paige was born just outside Atlanta, Georgia and began singing in local coffee shops and restaurants in her hometown at the age of five. At the age of seventeen, she relocated to L.A. and toured the country with the Top 40 covers act Joe's Band. In 1996, she teamed up with producer Andy Goldmark, known for his ability to create hits and develop new rising stars. They began with a dance version of Aretha Franklin's classic track "Chain of Fools." The record instantly came to the attention of the German indie label Edel Records, whose president, Jonathan First, was searching for a fresh-faced pop act to establish overseas presence. He was so impressed by Jennifer's talent that he flew to L.A. and gave her a record contract.

Her self-titled debut album was released in August 1998 and consisted of guitar-driven mid-tempo songs. Critics took notice of her voice, and Billboard declared "Paige succeeds in the nearly impossible task of oozing smouldering sensuality without resorting to typical groans and moans; instead, she uses her notably flexible vocal range to convey the emotion of the tune.... As a result, she breathes a refreshing intensity into the song."

Her debut single, "Crush," topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand & Canada and became a Top 5 hit in the US and UK. The album was followed by two other singles, "Sober" and "Always You," the latter reaching #6 on the Billboard Dance Chart, but the singles failed to make an impact on the radio or on the pop charts.

"Saturday Night" is a single released in 2005 by Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's brother Aaron in 2005. After a sleu of albums successful with the tween crowd, Aaron tried to drift into a bigger demographic. He signed to Trans Continental Records and recorded an albums worth of tracks that never materialised.

The single was a huge flop and went by unnoticed. Shortly after its release, Aaron sued Trans Continental and manager Lou Pearlman to be released from his contract. Since he was underage at the time of signing the contract he was granted release and the album was never released.

When Spice Girl Melanie C first ventured out onto her own, guesting on Bryan Adams' hit single "When You're Gone," her future in the music business looked bright. Virgin Records threw her into the studio to record a solo album. The result was a hodge-podge of tracks that didn't seem to go together but somehow made a rather impressive record. The first two singles were Top 10 flops, charting at #4 - a position that any Spice Girl would kill for today.

However, things changed with the release of the albums' third single. "Never Be the Same Again" featured guest vocals from A-list rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who has since perished in an unfortunate automobile accident. Released on March 20, 2000 the single debuted at #1 in the charts, knocking former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell's single "Bag it Up" from the top spot to #4. The single sold 401,000 copies in the UK alone and was the 18th best-seller on 2000. It has also sold over 1.5 million copies in Europe - 900,000 of them in Germany. It charted at #2 in Australia, selling 90,000 copies. The singles' success revived interest in "Northern Star," the album from which it was lifted.

"Dear Mr. President" is a song that was recorded for Pink's fourth album, "I'm Not Dead." Pink said that the song is an open letter to the President of the United States and that it is one of the most important songs she has ever written. She stated that it would never be released as a single because it was too important to be perceived as a publicity stunt. Surprise surprise - it's since been released in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the UK.

In an interview with MTV News Pink stated she hoped Bush heard the song and that "[he] is proud of the fact that we live in a country where we can do things like that, where we can have dissent, talk, communicate and share our opinions." After she performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live on April 11, 2007, she thanked Jimmy Kimmel for letting her sing it, telling him that many radio station DJs had been told they couldn't discuss the track if she was a guest, and that she wasn't allowed to perform it on other U.S. television shows.

The single held the #1 spot on the Belgian Ultratop 50 Chart for four weeks, becoming the first download-only song to reach the top. It reached #1 in Austria, the Top 5 in Switzerland & Germany (where it was certified gold) and the Top 40 in the Netherlands and New Zealand.

"Bounce" is a track by German singer Sarah Connor. Released in Germany in 2003, the single hit the Top 20 and was a moderate hit and was eventually released across Europe, charting within the Top 20 in almost every country.

In Winter of 2004, a pair of American DJs got ahold of a copy of the single and began playing it in heavy rotation. It was soon receiving huge US airplay and went on to chart at #54 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Destiny's Child star turned solo artist Beyoncé landed a prime role in the screen adaptation of the Broadway phenom "Dreamgirls" and, in turn, recorded the entire films' soundtrack. "Listen" was released as the first single from the film's soundtrack album on December 5, 2006 in the US and on February 19, 2007 in the UK. It was nominated for both the 2007 Golden Globe Award and the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was one of four new compositions written especially for the film version of "Dreamgirls," and is not present in the original 1981 Broadway production.

Beyoncé scored positive reviews for "Listen," with most reviewers praising her range and intensity. USA Today suggested "Listen" as one of the tracks off the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack to download, stating that "Beyoncé delivers some of her fiercest singing yet." Entertainment Weekly was less impressed, describing "Listen" as "an inspirational ballad about 'the song in my heart,' which builds to an enormous schlock-opera climax" and "gloopy."

Beyoncé performed "Listen" at the 2007 49th Annual Grammy Awards. At the 79th Academy Awards held the same year, Beyoncé performed the song as a duet with her Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Hudson.

Dannii Minogue | So Under Pressure (2006)

In 2006, after a fifteen-year floptastic career in the music business, Aussie diva Dannii Minogue released a compilation of her biggest hit singles alongside a few brand-new tracks thrown in for good measure. One of those new tracks was "So Under Pressure," a quirky and innovatice dance tune helmed by AATW production team LMC. Dannii claims the track was written about her sister's ordeal with breast cancer. The track debuted at #20 on the UK singles chart and fell to #60 the following week, spending only two weeks in the Top 75. Ouch!

Many people believe Dannii's sister (Karly? Keelee?) is the bigger talent and more successful Minogue sibling... but Dannii is the undeniable Queen of Clubs - with more #1 UK dance hits than anyone else in history!

"So Under Pressure" is another CD that I was lucky enough to have signed & am I proud to have it in my collection!

In 1998 LeAnn Rimes burst onto the UK music scene with the smash hit "How Do I Live." Since then, LeAnn's singles have been remixed by high-profile DJs and remixers such as Graham Stack, Thunderpuss, Dave Audé, Almighty, Riva and more, with the remixes proving to be as popular as the originals. The Graham Stack mix of "Can't Fight the Moonlight" was in fact the US hit version of the single.

The remix album brings together the best of LeAnn's mixes from 1998-2004 plus an a cappella version of the Judy Garland classic "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" performed at G-A-Y in January of 2004.

Tin Tin Out feat. Emma Bunton | What I Am (1999)

"What I Am" was Baby Spice Emma Bunton's first outing as a solo artist. Released as a collaboration with production team Tin Tin Out, the song had major competition from Emma's former bandmate Geri Halliwell. Both sides denied that the clash was deliberate and wished each other well in the chart battle. Geri resorted to flaunting a celebrity fling with DJ Chris Evans for publicity. On the first day of sales, Geri was ahead by a slim 100 copies but managed to achieve the top spot by the end of the week, outselling Emma by 33,000 copies!

Steps | One for Sorrow (1999)

Steps were a five-piece boy/girl group based out of the UK from the late 1990s into 2000. One of their biggest chart successes, "One for Sorrow," was released in the US as part of the soundtrack to the teen romantic comedy "Drive Me Crazy." Tony Moran remixed the track for its US release which was featured only on the films' soundtrack and the CD single. The band then opened for Britney Spears during the summer of 1999, performing "One for Sorrow" and a couple of their other biggest tracks.

When originally released in the UK it spent six weeks in the Top 20, selling almost 400,000 copies.

Holly Valance | State of Mind (2003)

"State of Mind" was the first and only single to be released from Aussie soap star Holly Valance's sophomore album by the same name. The song was a dramatic shift in style in comparison to Holly's first few single releases. The song became her third Top 10 UK single, charting at #8 and peaked at #14 in Australia. Despite the relative success of the single, the album failed to chart within the Top 50 in either the UK or Australia.

Holly has not recorded or released music since.

All Saints - Never Ever (1997)

"Never Ever" was the second single released from All Saints' self-titled debut album. It became a mildly successful worldwide hit and was the first of five #1 singles in the UK for the group and reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. A total of 1,263,658 copies of the single were sold in the UK, making it their biggest hit to date. 770,000 copies were sold before it became #1 which makes it more than any single ever before in the UK chart history. The group won two BRIT Awards for "Never Ever" in 1998: Best Single and Best Video.

After the release of the "Never Ever" single the album stormed up the charts, although never reaching the #1 position. Since the sales were steady over a long period, it established All Saints as one of the most successful and bestselling girl groups ranking second to the Spice Girls in the UK and Europe.

Paulina Rubio - Don't Say Goodbye (2002)

Mexican singer Paulina Rubio for her start in a children's pop group called Timbiriche in the 1980s. But by the early 1990s she struck out on her own and began recording and releasing music specifically for the Latin American and South American markets. After the late 1990s Latin invasion in the US, many labels demanded their Spanish-speaking artists record crossover material. Rubio was no different. Her smash Spanish-language single "Yo Sigo Aquí" was recorded in English and received a small-scale release in various European countries in early 2001. It went by unnoticed but Universal were adament that Paulina record a full album of English material.

Paulina enlisted the help of the same crew who had put together her hit 2000 album "Paulina" to record English versions of various tracks from the album as well as a few new songs. The end result was the "Border Girl" album. Despite major TV promotion from both Paulina and the label, both the lead single, "Don't Say Goodbye," and the album flopped miserably. "Don't Say Goodbye" landed just outside the Top 40 in the US and peaked at #32 in the UK.

Nelly Furtado - Turn Off the Light (2001)

"Turn Off the Light" is the second single from Canadian singer Nelly Furtado's first album, Whoa, Nelly! The single peaked at #4 on the UK singles chart and#5 on the Billboard Hot 100, her highest chart position until her 2006 single "Promiscuous" reached #1. A remix featuring rappers Ms. Jade and Timbaland was released, and a dance remix reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

Furtado, who cited a song by the Canadian band Big Sugar as the inspiration for "Turn Off the Light", has described it as "a real song ... Though I may seem so independent and stuff, blah, blah, blah, when I turn out the light at night I can get lonely just like everybody else. Maybe that's why it's such a good song and everyone is responding to it – because it's real. Just a song with a fun, hooky chorus."

"The One" was the fourth English-language single from Shakira's 2001 crossover album "Laundry Service," written by Shakira and Glen Ballard. The album version was bumped in favor of the Glen Ballard remix, which was used for the music video and radio play.

The single failed to crack the Top 40 in the US but was a Top 20 hit throughout Europe and Australia.

Melanie B | Hot (2000)

Melanie B - better known as Scary Spice - had her first taste of solo success in 1998 when Missy Elliott was putting together the soundtrack for the film "Why Do Fools Fall In Love." Missy had written a tune called "I Want You Back" that she wanted Mel to sing that ended up charting at #1 in the UK and sold 222,800 copies.

She again dabbled with the hip-hop sound in 2000, recording a cover of the classic track "Word Up" with Missy's producer and friend Timbaland. The song was a miserable flop, failing to crack the UK Top 10.

Despite the setback, Virgin Records tossed Melanie back into the studio to cut a solo album. Sisqo, Darkchild, Jam & Lewis and Missy Elliott were all involved in putting together the album. With such musical heavyweights, one would think that the album would've been a surefire smash. However, the first single, "Tell Me," kept getting moved around to avoid competition, setting the album back. When released, it debuted at #28 on the UK album charts and sank like a stone.

The album was set to be released in the US with a different set of singles and be re-released in the UK to pick up sales. The third single to be released from the album, "Lullaby," limped into the UK singles chart at #13 and Melanie was subsequently dropped from Virgin Records.

I was lucky enough to have my copy of this floptacular album signed by Melanie in 2002!

In 1999, movie star Jennifer Lopez began her venture into the music industry. Her debut album "On the 6" went on to be certified three times platinum in the US and platinum in the UK.

Jennifer wanted "Feelin' So Good" to be released as the first single from the album, but as happens with many artists, she didn't get her wish. It was released as the fourth single from "On the 6" in March 2000 and peaked at #15 in the UK and #51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Señorita" was the fourth and final single to be released from boybander Justin Timberlake's debut solo album "Justified." Its baseline and basic instrumentals were licensed by Justin from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. The lyrics, although different, were sung in a similar style to those on an old Jackson b-side.

The single didn't fare as well as his previous efforts, but being the fourth single from an album, that is to be expected. It peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #13 on the UK singles chart.

Kylie Minogue | In Your Eyes (2002)

Kylie Minogue was seeing the biggest international success of her career with the release of the smash single "Can't Get You Out of My Head," so it was only natural to keep up the momentum with another fun dance-pop number.

"In Your Eyes" was lifted as the second single from the "Fever" album and was originally scheduled to be released in January 2002 but radio was hesitant to lead go of "Head." When it was eventually released the week after Valentine's Day, it debuted at #3 in the UK singles chart, becoming Kylie's twenty-second Top 10 single. It remained on the chart for sixteen weeks and ended up topping the UK airplay chart. In Australia, the song was certified gold prior to its release on pre-sales only. Capitol Records skipped "In Your Eyes" in the US, moving right onto "Love at First Sight," the third international single from the album.

Geri Halliwell | Ride It (2004)

After a three-year hiatus from recording and releasing music, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell returned to the studio to record her third album for EMI.

One of the first songs to be recorded was "Ride It." Produced by Quiz and Larossi and Ian Masterson, the track was a fun, camp dance tune that was sure to garner some attention.

EMI wanted to release Geri's cover of the Crystal Waters classic "100% Pure Love" and even commissioned mixes and a video concept. Geri was having none of this, however, and set everything up for "Ride It" to be released. Geri came up with the video concept, the choreography and promotional gimmicks.

Depsite her desperate for a fourth UK #1, she was trounced by Lemar, Destiny's Child and Girls Aloud - a band that Geri herself had helped to put together! The single limped into the charts at #4 and dropped only spent three weeks in the Top 20. "Ride It" went on to sell 51,400 copies, and was the 143rd best selling single of 2004.

La Toya Jackson | La Toya (1988)

After the flop that was her 1986 Private-I album "Imagination," La Toya Jackson was snatched up by Germany's Teldec label. Record-producing powerhouses Full Force and Stock/Aitken/Waterman were brought in to create some class-A tunes for La Toya. Full Force brought four tracks to the table, which made up the first half of the record which primarily consisted of stong R&B beats, while S/A/W produced three on the second, pop-oriented half. La Toya has said in inteviews that she was dissatisfied with the final product because of her limited involvement.

The albums' first single, "(Ain't Nobody Loves You) Like I Do," was released in Europe only and peaked in the Top 20 of the German singles chart. The first worldwide release, "You're Gonna Get Rocked," didn't chart as high but became rather well-known in American R&B circles. No more noteable singles were released from the record. "You Blew," "Such a Wicked Love" and "Tell Me He Means Nothing to You at All" all received small-scale releases and bombed.

Despite the albums failure, many La Toya fans see it as one of her finest efforts, namely because of the high-profile contributors.

I was lucky enough to have Toy sign my copy of the album earlier this year.
